Is the Future of Workout Headphones Custom Molded Earphones?

We recently pointed out all the amazing workout headphones at CES 2012, but one pair of headphones we left off the list were the Sonomax Sculpted Eers custom fit headphones.  They were actually named Best Headphones of 2012 at the CES Innovations Awards, and now that we’ve had a little more time to check out one of the first self-fitted custom earphones, we have one question: Is the future of workout headphones custom molded earphones?

Most custom fit headphones can run you close to one thousand dollars and usually require ear moldings by an Audiologist or other specialist.  However, Sonomax is taking a slightly different route.  Their new  Sculpted Eers PCS-100 eliminate the need for ear moldings, by allowing you to do it yourself and also bring down the cost considerably (currently listed at $199.99).

There’s actually two different models, the PCS-100 and the PCS-200, the main difference single dynamic speaker versus dual driver, which increases sound quality, but at a premium of $299.99.

We’re going to focus on the PCS-100.  If you were wondering, the PCS stands for Performance, Comfort and Safety.

Is the Future of Workout Headphones Custom Molded Earphones?

So, what’s the answer to the question?  To be honest, we’re not sure.  Workout headphones are an entirely different breed of headphones.  While sound quality is important, the major emphasis is always on additional features like comfort, durability, sweat resistance, and others.  Sculpted Eers does offer a pretty cool product with a self-fitting custom earphone, and if you’ve got a few bucks to spare they may be worth the try.

Only time will tell if these new custom molded earphones will be able to make a dent in the workout headphones world.
